It's crazy to think that something as serious as air travel can have a part of it be determined on a first-come-first-serve basis like this. The entire process of air travel is so orchestrated, organized, and meticulous, but if you fly this airline, the seating process becomes as organized as a kindergarten at recess. The entire process is just asking for the Thunderdome-style showdowns that we sometimes see in these seating arrangements.
